Automation Engineer – Teradata, dbt & Python | Banking | Utrecht

Are you an experienced Automation Engineer with a strong background in data warehousing, ETL automation and Python? Do you enjoy building reliable data pipelines, improving development processes and working with modern data technologies? We are looking for an Automation Engineer to join a leading financial institution in Utrecht, where you will help develop and maintain automated data warehouse solutions in a complex, regulated environment.

About the role

As an Automation Engineer, you will join an Agile team within the Data Domain, focusing on automating and optimising ETL processes and data warehouse deployments.

You will work closely with data modellers and fellow engineers to ensure reliable data processing, efficient deployments and high-quality datasets used for regulatory reporting.

Your key responsibilities will include:

• Building and maintaining automated ETL workflows within enterprise data warehouses.
• Deploying data models and mappings on Teradata using dbt, including developing macros.
• Developing automated testing solutions using Cucumber, SQL and Python.
• Supporting data modellers with technical issues, troubleshooting and tooling improvements.
• Investigating performance bottlenecks and optimising data loading processes.
• Maintaining development pipeline documentation and assessing the impact of system changes.
• Collaborating with engineers in an Agile environment, participating in code reviews and sharing technical knowledge.

Who are you?

We are looking for a proactive, technically strong engineer who takes ownership, enjoys solving complex challenges and communicates effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• HBO-level education or higher, preferably in Computer Science or a related discipline.
• Minimum 6 years of relevant IT experience, including at least 4 years working with data warehouses.
• Strong hands-on experience with SQL and Python.
• Proven experience with Teradata and dbt, including writing dbt macros.
• Experience developing extensions within PowerDesigner.
• Strong understanding of data warehouse architecture, ETL processes and data modelling.
• Experience with Git, GitLab and Cucumber.
• Strong problem-solving skills, a proactive mindset and excellent communication skills.
